I love my 1997 pontiac sunfire convertible! had it for three years and have regularly replaced oil and fluids. while driving home from work, i suddenly decrease speed and have to get over to the side of the expressway. I lift up the hood to try to see whats wrong, (mind you im an 18 year old girl with not a lot of expertise under the hoods of cars) and nothings smoking, and my car wont turn over or start. so i wait an hour for help and when it turns over, the motor violently shakes and black smoke comes out the tail pipe! ANYONE HELPPPPPP! suggestions! please! i want to keep this car because its nice no rust and drives very well in snow even though its a light car. HELP PLEASE!

your title says head gasket broken but no where in your post do you indicate how you came to this conclusion. Black smoke indicates an overly rich mixture suggesting a fuel injection problem.

friends dad is a long time mechanic and owns his own shop and he towed my car home. he got up under the hood and looked but didnt touch bc he said he doesnt work on Q4 motors because they are finicky.

Still doesnt explain why he thinks it's a head gasket, blown head gasket produces white smoke. So you have to find a shop nearby that will work on the car and have it towed over unless you or a friend are going to try and fix it yourself.
