1997 Sunfire: Trunk doesn't open

Just purchased this car and trunk will not open. I can access through the rear seat only, no remote access, no switch in the front. I was told I need a new trunk latch but when I search for the part I get trunk latch cable which appears to be all plastic. Before I crawl up into my trunk with a flashlight, what should I be looking for to verify what part I need? It sounds like an easy fix but considering how hot and dark it will be in there I want to get it right the first time. If anyone has pictures of what it should look like in there it would be appreciated.

maybe you should crawl into the trunk and look for an emergency release handle. It would be right above the latch area on the interior of the trunk lid. not all vehicles have it. It's hard to tell what part you need until you get the trunk open. You can look at www.gmpartsdirect.com for diagrams.

yeah....

this happened to me, crawl inside with a flashlight. the door release clips on like lego, if you are lucky its not broken, prolly not, good luck!
i just had to push it back on, it wasent fully off, but there was no way i could open the trunk.
