How can you tell if you have a bad air compressor? and how can i discharge the system of the compressor oil and freon?

1) Either the compressor won't kick in, or it makes a lot of noise when it does. Not kicking in could be related to other issues, such as low freon, failed low or high pressure switches, blown fuse, etc.

2) There are some legal considerations against freely releasing freon into the air - even for the newer R134. If that won't make you lose sleep, then just hold down the Schraeder valve with something - it will get cold as the pressure is relieved, so frostbite is a real consideration. About the only way to get the oil out is to remove the compresser, remove the orifice, if so equipped, then flush the system.

Suggest to do a little more research before calling the compressor bad - it may be a simple fix. Also, if you're not sure of what you're doing, recommend to get professional work done. The high pressures and extreme temperatures can cause a lot of equipment and personal damage that more than offset the savings of doing-it-yourself.
