replaced starter and now it is very loud when cranking. Shim or no shim still loud as hell. Any ideas?

Can you describe the sound your talking about? Otherwise we will all just be speculating.

Also is the starter making the noise or is it the engine? Will it fire?

Was this a new starter or a salvage one (no judgement on using salvage parts from me :) )

A few more details would help out narrow it down.

starter noise

well it sounds like the starter gear when engaging the flywheel is either too close or too far from the flywheel, really loud metallic sound, not grinding noise but the car starts fine just loud, my Firebird with a 2.8L did the same noise after replacing it (the starter) had to play with many shims to get correct tooth clearance. I can't really explain it more than that. I thought someone might have the same problem and had a fix instead of me buying alot of shims a trying them. Anyhow the noise wasn't there until I replaced the starter which was not an OEM starter. Should have kept the original one and had it rebuilt....lol!!!!! Hope that helps.
