I have a 1999 pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 litre V-6. I live in Utah where it is cold in the winter and HOT in the summer. In the winter in the morning it squeeked like a bad belt. but the belt was new. I replaced the idler pulley hoping to make the squeek go away. Pulley was bad, Didn't turn easily. Did not fix squeek.
Still winter, Alternater goes bad and I replace it, It would not turn IT WAS BAD. Replaced the belt at the same time. The car would over heat and the water pump was bad. replaced water pump and belt. It is now summer. No squeeks.
Car is good for 8 months through winter. Seems to wear belt to fast so I replace tensioner pulley AND BELT. Now a belt goes out every 1000 miles.
Tears up the side first??
New parts
Idler pulley
Tensioner pulley
Water pump
Alternater
8 belts????WTF
P.S. It's my wifes car & I' in the dog house.............

It could be that one of the pulleys might have a damaged spot on it that is chewing the belt. Also look to make sure A/C compressor and alternator hasn't lost a mounting bolt, it can cause it to cock and chew a belt.
