I've got a problem with a 1999 pontiac grad am v6 SE.
When turning the key to the start position, the engine will turn over once and that's it, then all you hear is the starter spinning.
every once and a while i'll be able to get the car started, very seldom though.

i have disabled passlock with the 2.2k ohm resistor method.

battery is brand new, no codes, can hear fuel pump turn on every time i turn it to "on" postion, but fuel in the rail seems weak.

confused.

any ideas on where to start?

Crankshaft Position Sensor?

I can take a video of it, if that would help anyone to see what i am talking about>

if all you hear is the starter spinning you have a bad starter solenoid
concerning the backfiring, do you have a check engine light on?

nope no check engine lights on.

anyway i can test the starter without taking it off the car?

how are you going to test the starter without taking it off the car? you stated the starter spins without turning the engine which means the solenoid on the starter is not extending the bendix gear to mesh with the engine flywheel/ring gear .
