First off, let me say I know very, very little about cars. I have a 99 Grand Am (2.4L TwinCam, Automatic) which has recently been running fine until early yesterday after a heavy rainstorm. After which, when driving it home from work, the "TRAC OFF" light came on and stayed on for the duration of the drive. Once the light came on, the transmission started to act strange and was jumping gears at lower speeds. This was also accompanied by a loud humming sound that usually is not present.
After looking through the owner's manual, I tried all the suggested solutions: Pushing the ETS button on the console to turn the Traction back on, checking the e-brake to make sure it was all the way down, restarting the engine, and checking the gas cap. None of those suggested solutions worked and the car is still showing the traction off light and shifting strange.
I would take it to a Pontiac dealership in the area to get the engine error codes pulled, except they have abhorrent business practices and rarely know how to remedy the problem. I have read online that the traction light may come on if there is a loose or corroded wire connection to the hubs or if there is an issue with one of the wheel bearings. Both are relatively costly repairs, and being no mechanic, I probably could not fix it myself. It is essential to get this car up and running, as it is used on a daily basis.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and were able to resolve it? What do all of you think it could possibly be?
Thanks
