1999 Pontiac Sunfire's check engine light is on.?

When the car is idle, the whole engine shakes rapidly, and there is a chugging noise from the exhaust. The car are also has a weird smell to it, it's hard to describe, but it smells like something that could be burning. When you drive the car, it drives pretty rough. Any idea of what the problem might be? How much do you think it will cost to fix?

scan it at anny parts store free...ever tuned it? you know [or maybe not] cars dont run forever without work.

replace the spark plug wires and check and see if any wires are contacting the manifold.
