I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6. Recently the car started to start weird. When you turn the key it starts but then after a few seconds it stalls. I hear the fuel pump in the beginning to pressurize the line. You can keep turning the key to start it and it will keep starting then stalling after a few seconds. Please help.

Do you have a check engine light on? Have you followed normal maintenance of the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, etc?

sorry for long delay and i just got the car as a Christmas present for fiances brother as first car. the engine under the hood is clean and the check engine light is on but its for the sending unit for the gauge on the dash and the security light is on the owner said its been on since she got it and it just started doing this like a week ago the car is still at the owners house

Is the security light flashing when it stops?

Check This

Try changing the air filter and see if the mass air flow sensor is working correctly. and also try injector cleaner.

A gauge sending unit shouldn't throw a cel. You need to have the code scanned to get the correct fault.

As Zimgxp stated the light is not on because of a gauge and the security light shouldnt be on either. Have you already purchased this car? Not sure why the engine being clean has anything to do with knowing whether it has bee maintained, it's pretty easy to clean an engine before trying to sell it.

i have a code reader i spent 300 on it it plugs into the car and then i plug into the computer and a programs runs the code to the car and the specific vin for the car it said it was the sending unit

about 2 days ago when trying to get it to start after it stalled out it started to like release a burst of air after it stalled like too much air was in the engine and it was releasing it could it be a really bad vacuum leak

or could it be the fuel pump is bad and thats why its throwing that sending unit code

Sending unit for which gauge, gas gauge? Could you please post the code?

This code has nothing to do with the gas gauge and it has nothing to do with your stalling problem. Read the attached link concerning the code. Try a fuel pressure test and cleaning the throttle body and IAC valve.

i havent check the throttle body yet or iac valve but i did the fuel pressure test and it was at 42 psi on pressurization of the line and then when i start the car it increases for less than a second and goes back to 42 psi like its supposed to but it stalls before i can get a longer reading, i even had someone rev up the engine right after starting and the fuel pressure does the same thing and it stalls in the same amount of time so its nothing with the fuel pump. what else can i do or check for

the body control module has the 3 connectors but there are 3 wires that are not in the connectors. the owner told me that 2 of them were out since she got the car but doesn't remember the 3rd white wire being out its not the module itself i switched it out with a Pontiac same exact car that runs and drives i cant find a diagram or anything that shows where the wires actually go

well before doing anything with that i should mention that even if i slam on the gas or leave it alone on idle it still stalls out after a few seconds so i dont think it would be anything with the air or fuel cause if it was then i think it would stall out faster by stepping on the gas and revving it higher i read alot and is it possible that its the pass lock system
