So for the last couple weeks my fiero has been acting weird. Every once I'm awhile my tach will shoot up to 2500 and it will go crazy. Then I start sputtering and lagging and strive power from the engine. Then it starts to smell like gas!It will act like it will shut off. Then if I cruise in 4th gear for a little bit it will all go away?

get a friend to go in ur car while u check underneath and under the hood with him reving the engine gradually from 1000rpms to MAX rpms and look for gas leaks
low fuel pressure can cause sputtering and power loss
low fuel pressure is usually caused by a gas leak
by crusing in 4th will not cause high gas consumption so you may only have a small leak if it stops in 4th gear and is on a steady speed so ur RPMS are flat on lets say 2000
that means ur leak is most likely occuring when ur pushing down on the gas pedal.
thats the only thing i can think of that will cause the issues ur talking about with a bad gas smell
