Hello everyone.
I picked up a 2000 GTP last night with a toasted motor. The interior is perfect and the body is good with little rust underneath. I was told it was just a bad head gasket so I met with the guy to buy it from him where he told me he was driving it when it started smoking. He said the low oil light came on and the motor started knocking. He finished the drive to work and noticed an oil slick on the passengers side running down the door. I wanted to just replace the head gasket but now that I heard the whole story it sounds like Ill have to pull the motor. So I have a few questions for some other Grand Prix enthusiasts.
It has 100,000 miles on it. I hope to make it my new aggressive daily driver.
1. Pull the motor or just replace fix the problem and drive it until I have no choice but to replace the motor.
2. Rebuild the motor or buy one online.
3. Modify the performance while the engine is out with an aggressive cam or anything like that.
4. Put a junkyard motor in it for about 300 bucks.
5. Put a cheap long block in it and rebuild the current motor for performance.
6. Do anything to it that improves hp or maybe MPG including flashing the cpu but does not cost an arm and a leg.

let me know if I missed an option and let me know what you would do. I'm open to all suggestions. I'm looking to keep it between 2 and 5k and have it up and running by the beginning of the new year.

Well I'm not so sure where the oil slick came from... Bad oilpan gasket is a thought, and the oil filter is on the passenger side.. You could pull the motor and replace all the gaskets and check for any cracks in it. You can find GP motors for relatively cheap, even the GTP motors so that's a thought. I mean, all the options you gave sound quite appealing. It's just up to you, and your budget.
One small disclaimer is that if the motor seems to have been bagged out, then you should give the transmission some thought, especially if you want to modify the car.

The real answer has to come from you. I own an 04 GTP and until someone can come out with a car that has the look and performs as well, I'll probably keep it, change motors if necessary or go old school get/build a restomod. What it always boils down to is, can you afford another one? How much do you like this one? How easy is it to replace the one you got? Since the newest of Grand Prix's are going on 5 years old, they're going to start getting tired, your generation is 9 years old at best, if you have one with a good shell and interior, you're halfway there. But, if you really aren't excited about the cars look, it's just a car. I know if a guy who's doing a radical build on the equivalent of a early eighties Fairmont station wagon. I could care less about a Fairmont sedan, much less a wagon, but he's excited about it. I also can't fathom why anyone would ever want a smart car, but they buy 'em and I try not to run over them with my truck.

So the question is this: what do YOU want to plop your butt in when you punch the accelerator?

Sorry, forgot this part: It's always easier to rebuild an engine out of the car and tune it once it's in. And if you do go this route, get the tranny rebuilt if you can swing the payment.

^Yep. He's absolutely right.

Zack, That was what I was thinking. I even went so far as to assume that perhaps the intake manifold broke and the boost went down into the oilpan and pushed the oil out. CatSkinner, I pulled the motor and should have the new motor here next week, although it was promised to ship here by today, and I am dropping off the trans for a rebuild tomorrow. I dont know about this car since I just bought it but it seems fun, is super charged, has the hud which is cool and a million other options on it. Its an improvement from my Ford Escort which needs a lot of work and is very rusty. This one has some cancer which is odd but im looking forward to getting it running and cleaning up the spots of rust.
