Just got the mother in laws van back from its 3rd transmission rebuild in 6 months (thanks Ammoco, for such great service. NOT:mad:) and it wont accelerate past 3500 rpm. The transmission shop told us that the catalytic convertor was clogged, (I dont know why i listened to them, but its better than paying them to do it) so i installed a test pipe in its place and it still does the same thing. It will accelerate to 4000 rpm then cough and sputter, i release the accelerator and it drops to 1800 rpm and hold there for a second or two, then drops to idle. Has anyone else seen or heard of a problem like this?? Any help would be appreciated

are there any engine codes, when is the last time the air and fuel filters were changed?

Fuel filter is brand new and I removed the air filter to test and it does the same thing.

assuming no engine codes, you can try doing a fuel pressure test and start checking ignition components, coil etc.
