I have a 2000 Pontiac grand am automatic. It first started giving me trouble at lights, it would idle really hard (shake really bad I'd have to sit at lights in neutral). Then it wouldn't start right away and sometimes when I'd start it, all the lights (check engine, trac off, seat belt (when my seatbelt was on)) would blink and click and just seem like it was going crazy, now it stopped doing that BUT now it dyes, it's seems to only be when a revv the engine and the rpms get up high, I started it once drove it half an hour away, it was fine (with no lights) but as soon as I turned into a parking lot, the steering wheel got real hard to turn, then locked up and it sputtered and dyed, I let it sit and was able to start it. I took it to a mechanic, they weren't sure what was wrong. Can anyone help?!

Someone thought it could be the coil pack? Could that be a possibility? Exhaust kinda smells like gas.

First you need a better mechanic with the proper diagnostic tools. Could be the throttle position sensor or the idle air control but those are just guesses. How about the basics, how long since you have had the air filter and fuel filter replaced? How many miles on the plugs, over 100k replace them. Did your mechanic do a fuel pressure test? Is your check engine light on constantly?

I just took the coil pack off and the valley where it sits has oil in it. What could this mean? That my problem?

I've only had it for two years and it has 154,xxx miles on it. That hasn't been done since I've had it

And service engine soon light is on, not check engine, check engine came on once and went off right away

Were you able to figure out what was going on?

You have to have the engine light scanned and if the oil is on the base of the coil packs it will cause a problem. You also have to maintain the engine, filters, plugs, etc.

Not the throttle position sensor, someone had the same problems with their car and suggested it. Mine was clean

check the coil adapter (its the whitish plastic thing that the coils sit in and the rubber boots connect to) for black lines from arcing to the head thats what mine was doing but it was the engine miss all the time, mine had oil in and around the plugs, not alot but don't think it would hurt much. does your car backfire? that might mean more mechanical problems
