2000 pontiac sunfire Car problems?

I was driving home, when suddenly the battery light came on. Once that happened it seemed that the steering wheel was slightly locked and very hard to turn. As i rushed to make it home before my car competely died the coolant levels shot up very high and was making a "knocking sound" Any ideas?

The car still starts up though

You lost the drive belt that drives the alt and the power steering, and the water pump. Sounds like it overheated also.
