I went out this morning to go to work and my sunfire wouldn't start. The dome light works and the headlights and dashlights work when I turn the headlights on. When I turn the key nothing happens, I turned the key back to accessory and nothing happens. No radio, no warning lights on the dash, no nothing that requires the key to be on the have power. I have checked the fuses and have pulled the steering column apart and tested the wires and the ignition switch. When I tested the wires I have power then while turning the key I have power thought the switch. I have no idea what to check next. Any help would be great.

Thanks

I had a similar issue a number of years back. After dealing with a bunch of garbage from a Dealership I took it elsewhere and figured it out myself with a new mechanic.

1. When I turned the key - none of the dashlights would turn on (check engine, air bag, oil)

2. When I turned my key part I should have been able to hear the selinoids clicking as they made contact.

3. Essentially when I tried to start the car it was like it was dead (no power whatsoever). Worse - it was intermitent. SOmetimes it was fine.

In the end - it was a small 1" square box that was installed by GM AFTER I had bought my car as some part of a recall. I apologize I can't remember exactly what it was called or what this part did - I just remember losing my mind because all the pain was caused by a part that was installed after the fact. If I looked under my hood now - it's bolted to the frame with some wires and was a part installed afterwards. Ask the mechanic to look for that.
