So I bought this 2001 2200 sunfire auto, base from what I can tell. it had a bad valve cover leak, so I installed a new one. found a lot of blowback oil in the throttle body, so I cleaned that out and bought a new pcv valve. The central metal tube coming out of the valve cover is not the pcv valve like on the cavaliers and berettas... and I can not for the life of me figure out where it is. EGR is hard to spot too. Any pics or tips for this?

thanks guys.

from the Hanes manual, there is no PCV valve.

On 2.2L OHC engines, the pcv system consists of the single hose between the valve cover and the air intake duct, and the crankcase ventilation housing (or simply, the vent housing) permanently affixed to the underside of the valve cover. Crankcase blow-by vapors are directed through internal passages in the engine block and cylinder head up to a vent housing, from which they're drawn through the hose into the air intake duct, then through the throttle body and manifold and into the combustion chambers where they're consumed along with the air/fuel mixture." pg 6-23

Look for the EGR on the drivers side end of the cylinder head.

thanks for the info; I had a lot of oil in the intake plenum and sitting on the butterfly of the throttle body. replaced the valve cover gasket, cleaned and flushed out the dryer assembly on the valve cover and of course the crud on the TB. There has been a smell of burning oil when the car gets hot, but no leaks, I'm about to pull the upper intake off again tonight to see if it's blowing back again, but I don't know what to do about it. Are there channels in the head that clog up preventing crankcase ventilation, and causing blowback? I don't think I should have to install traps for a stock commuter is all, and want to stop consuming oil.

How many miles on it? Have you done a compression test? Are you overfilling the engine oil? I suppose the baffle under the valve cover could break at a weld or rivet but there is nothing else to the system.

I noticed that regarding the baffle. It's not overfilled, and has 160k on it. I'm sure I'm experiencing some blow by and am comfortable with that. I threw a can of restore in there Friday afternoon and it's been running much better since, vacuum seems to be up for whatever reason, maybe a hose was disconnected as the trans is shifting better and there is more low end power. I'm going to pull the plenum off again tomorrow after my kid drives it a couple times back and forth to school to look for more evidence of oil blowby. If that is the case we'll compression test this weekend. I'll report my findings back to be helpful to others in the same situation.

Edit: NOT overfilling btw.

OK, time to get a code reader. My son said it was driving fine this morning and just died in an intersection. didn't want to re-start but finally got it running again. I'm willing to bet the 02 sensors have never been changed, it's probably been a long time for the oil as well, and who knows on the plugs. plug wires are newer ac/delco. back to square 1 I guess.

Update:

cylinder 4 had a bad plug, and all the other cylinders had micro fractures in the porcelain. replaced them all w/ Autolite platinums. I have been running Restore in the oil for 2 weeks now and am experiencing considerably less oil in the intake, telling me that 1, the product is working, as nothing else has changed, and two, that I am experiencing piston ring blow by. depending on how things shake out I will probably just leave it this way. The only thing that is testing bad at this point is the AIT sensor which will be changed out next week.

thanks for the update

I'll be pulling the intake again this weekend to review the blowby situation, but so far it has been running smoothly.

Anyone ever hear of the motor running rough after the ABS system engages? I tested the rear brake adjustment going downhill in the rain and pulled the e-brake; ABS worked, but then engine started sputtering and stalling for about 5 min then ran fine. any thoughts out there?
