2001 Grand Am GT transmission help

I just bought a 2001 Grand Am GT coupe with 160k on it transmission with a little clunky when I bought it rough shifts and stuff. Had the tranny oil replaced shifts silky smooth now. I was pulling into the highway and noticed it was slipping pretty bad in second gear I was like oh great I'm gunna need a new transmission after all:mad: So I play around with it a little more to see if I could figure out exactly what's going on. It only slips in second gear and only when in drive. When you put it manually into second and bring it to redline no slippage at all. Tried it several times could not get it to slip one bit. Back in drive and it slips hard jumping around all through second gear in the RPMs. Computer issue??

Thanks

Hope you didn't flush it. Just drop the pan and replace the filter see if metal is in pan. Anyway, any codes? Could be a solenoid going bad

Yep told them not to flush it. Had no metal shavings in the pan. No codes. Is a solenoid something hard to replace?

Kind of I suppose - all the electronics are inside the transmission, you can see a large wire that connects to it; from that 1 wire it branches off to several different locations. It should throw a code. And remember, this is an old car/ transmission, take it easy unless you want to rebuild it soon.

Are you driving it around atm? Check the fluid level too just for giggles couldn't imagine why just 2nd gear would be crazy and not the other gears - you'll have to level the car open that drain to see if fluid come out.

Don't forget to do a tune up on the car as well.

Fluid level is good. I drive it pretty easy normally I don't bring it to the redline daily. I think the problem so minuscule right now that I'll just have to wait until it gets worse before I do anything. Only when I'm laying on the gas in drive. If I have to get around somebody or something I'll just throw it in second or third and she's good to go. I'll keep you posted if anything else happens.

Thanks for all the support!

Cool, let us know. Usually if the torque solenoid goes out (as with most electronics on cars, they don't fail outright) it will have some shake/studder/stall issues. Just keep an eye on it. Keeping that car below 2k RPM is plenty of "go power" for daily driving and will be better on your wallet.
