Long time listener, first time caller.
This is my second Pontiac, and I love them. My 2001 Grand Am has 136k miles and I'm the original owner. It's been loved and cared for and always gone in for regular maintenance.
A couple of years ago, due to a faulty "something", I ended up throwing a rod, and freezing up the engine. As you can see, I'm not a "techie" and usually leave that to my mechanic or my daughter. The end result was a major rebuild on my engine (down to the block) and it's been running fine ever since.
About once a year, it goes in to get the throttle body cleaned, and it has regular oil and fluid changes. I had just gotten it back because the oil pressure switch disintegrated, and it was back to running like a champ.
Now to the issue at hand.... when coming home from Riverside yesterday, as I got off the freeway, the engine started running REALLY rough, and the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light and the LOW TRAC light came on at the same time. The engine light was flashing, so I pulled into the first gas station and shut it off. It nearly stalled twice in about 100 feet. I was watching the guages, and it wasn't overheating and no other lights came on.
I called my daughter, who said, "see if you can get it the three blocks home", so I left the gas station - I got about 300 feet down the street and pulled into a parking lot, as the car was running so rough. The lights continued to flash, so she came to meet me.
After sitting for about 20 minutes, and we checked all the fluids in the car (levels all normal), I started it up and babied it the last two blocks to the driveway.
The engine will start, run, and shift, but it sounds like there are six billion spiders in the exhaust, and the rough noise is coming from what sounds like the rear. The manual says it's something in the exhaust system (probably).... any ideas?
I'd rather not get rid of the car yet, since I drive to a less-than-desireable neighborhood for work, and it's perfect for detering thieves due to it's age.
