2001 grand am won't start

my daughter's 2001 grand am wouldn't start, just cranked away. a friend told me that the ignition cylinder (where the ignition key is inserted) is probably bad. a common problem. i took it to a chevy dealer and they diagnosed the problem as the ignition cylinder. they replaced it for about $75.00 plus gave a 12,000 mile or 12 month guarantee.

Thank you very much for the info. After several trips on a rollback to two different dealers and $600 later for a body control module, my daughter's car still would not start on occasion. I read your article and decided to give it a try. Thank God! It's running. It's nice to know that there are still some people around that are willing to help someone without taking them to the cleaners! Thanks again.

Car won't start

Hello, I just recieved this newsletter for the first time, but would like to respond to the issue of cars that won't start. My car is also a 2001 and the first time it did this I spent $473.00 to have it fixed. That did not include a possible ignition switch that was another $500.00. I was already quited upset that the bill was for labour only, no parts to be found so when the service advisor said perhaps if we change the ignition switch....give me my car and let me out of here.

I finally did get the information by accident from the local dealer. Last summer I was about to leave work Friday afternoon and start holidays when she did it again. I called the shop and was told they could not get me in for at least 10 days. The ink on the bill was not even dry yet, so I let loose with everything I had. The service advisor told me to relax, and to not repeat what he was to tell me. He advised if I put my key in the ignition, turn on the car bur not start it, give it 15 minutes and it will be ok. I did that and sure enough it was ok. I have had to do it a couple times since, but at least I am not on the hook and waiting for an insane bill from the shop.

Try this and let me know how you make out. Be sure not to start the car, just have all the dash lights on..........

I don't have the passlock chip in my key,but my car will do the same thing.
Acts like it's going to start at first, then does'nt. you can crank on it all day and no luck. So I replaced the fuel pump too thinking that was it.

Come to find out I had to do a security relearn on the BCM. It's accomplisted by turning the key to the start position for a sec. And leaving the key in the on position for 12 minutes, then to the off position for 30 seconds. Do this three times making sure to follow the clock. After the third time in the off position, try starting the car, it should crank-up.

No Start....

Good evening:

I am a newbie, from Ontario Canada and would offer the following for you to try, it works like a charm for me, and, I will tell you how I came to get the info.

Last year, my 01 GT did it again, went to leave work and went home by thumb. This was after having spent almost 400.00 six weeks before for the same problem. I called the Good Mechanic (GM) dealer who advised I would have to wait for almost two weeks as they were booked solid. I am a quiet man, and somewhat patient, but not on that day. My answer was if I went over with the car the tail lights would be sticking out of his hind end.

I guess he took me serious, as he came back on, told me to go to my car, turn the ignition on, do not start, but leave as is for 15 minutes or so. That I did and, voila, started like a charm. No expensive keys, no expensive diagnostics, just 15 minutes with the key on. I should mention that you turn the ignition off, then right away restart the car, if it doesn't work, do it again. This guy guaranteed it would work. I have not had a single problem with this system since. So, it will cost you nothing to try, it is up to you but this is from real life experience.

Good luck,
Garnet

did any of you who had the no start problem happen to check compression before doing the BCM relearn or new ignition switch?
