My son's 2002 Grand Am has begun having intermittent starting problems. The car can run fine for 2 or 3 days but then the engine will just crank but not turn over. I've had it to a mechanic twice who kept it for 2 days each time but did not experience the problem. On one occasion it stalled at a red light and would not restart. After the car sat for 1/2 hour it started up! When the car is running it's fine. The service enginer light came on briefly when it stalled and then went out. The mechanic who had it hoped that the service engine light would have thrown a code but he ran it through diagnostics and found nothing. Has anyone ever had this problem? I need some suggestions on what this could be. Help!!!!

You stated the engine will crank but will not turn over. Do you mean the engine will crank but will not run? If you cannot check when it doesn't start, ask the techician to check for spark and fuel injector pulse when cranking the engine. If you have both, I would check the fuel pressure. If the engine doesn't start, you would be missing 1 out of (spark, fuel pulse and fuel pressure) 3. I hope this helps.
