montana? my service engine light is on and the temperature gauge is not working. Don't know what the problem is? Check the coolant and everything is okay. I notice that the fan on the radiator is always running and that the heater is working. Any Ideas?

The service engine light is probably on BECAUSE of the coolant temperature gauge. The sensor may be inoperative. Have you had the OBD II system checked for codes? If not, you can have this done for free at your nearest Auto Zone. They should then help you diagnose the problem. If not, you'll probably want to take it into a dealer, but be advised, they will perform the same check at additional cost. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Is the engine actually running hot? If so, perhaps your radiator is blocked by debris. If not, the computer may be telling the rest of the systems, "Since I haven't heard from the temp sensor, you guys all act like the car is overheating, ok!?"

I'd look for a bad sensor, or broken sensor wire. Your local parts store will likely plug their analyzer into your car for free if you buy the replacement part there. That will tell you what's up.
