When my wifes 2002 Grand Am is started, all dash lights operate normally. After she drives about a block the "Trac Off" light comes on and stays on. The switch will not turn it off. A quick check came up with code "C1275". Description: "PCM Serial Data Malfunction - ABS."

Three questions: Is there anything I can check (sender connections, fuses, etc.), or is it best to just get a full diagnostic run? Will a full diagnostic be able to pinpoint the problem? Thanks.

Link is to info I found when I googled your code. Maybe it'll shed some light.

And this from a similar question regarding the same code but on a Cavalier.

"C 1275 is a serial data malfunction between the abs module and the engine computer(pcm). That code will not make your car run bad it will only disable abs braking. The regular brakes will work fine though. Most of the time that code can be traced back to a bad ground, bad abs module or a bad communication wire between the pcm and the abs module."

Thanks much for the advice.

For what it's worth: Based on the suggestions above I decided to start by looking for looking for bad wires. Turned out that was the right place to look. I found a three wire bundle (comming out of a much larger wire bundle) that had the wrapping "frayed" and a small wire (22 mm) "severed". I say "frayed" and "severed", actually I believe they were chewed by a squirrel. I soldered the wire back together, re-taped the bundle and the problem appears to be fixed.
