Whenever the car is started up it is idling higher then what seems normal and on a few occasions it idles extemely high where it seems like it is reving. When I was in traffic today it began to idle high and when I applied the break it seemed as if it were fighting against me, and the rpms shot up. I pulled over and put the car in park and it was reving. Any idea what the problem is?

AC Sensor

My AC Sensor was bad and my car revved extremely high. The dealer couldn't find the problem so a friend at work pointed out to me that the AC sensor could be bad. That is exactly what it was.

Same car, same problem, yet to be resolved

My daughter has the exact same problem with her 02 Grand-am. I noticed that if you put the car in neutral the idle instantly drops to the normal level and stays there as long as it is in neutral. As soon as you put it back into park the idle speed again goes erratic. It races way up and drops down so low that it often stalls. The fact that it runs fine with the gear selector in neutral leads me to believe that we have computer related issues that are tied to the prndl switch. (park-reverse-neutral-drive-low)

Good luck!
