My 2004 Pontiac Grand Am it cranks but it will not start, makes the normal engine starting, I decided to get some starter fluid (might be the wrong word) and it will start if I spray it in, but stop as soon as I stop spraying. I'm assuming it's the fuel pump, my real question is.

1. Is it the fuel pump?
2. Is the fuel pump inside the engine, gas tank, or outside of all of it?
3. Where should I find a fuel pump and instruction manuals?

any help would be greatly appreciated.
it wasn't starter fluid, it was something else that the guys at discount auto parts told me to try

OMG! you sprayed starting fluid into a modern gas engine? you should never open your own hood again! It may be the fuel pump but take it to a shop before you blow her up!

The fuel pump should run for about 2 seconds when the ignition key is rolled to the ON position. If you don't hear the 'purr' - then it's likely a fuel pump problem. However, don't overlook causes other than a failed pump - such as a failed fuel pump relay, a tripped inertia switch (if your model has one), or a faulty computer signal. Suggest to first validate that power is getting to the pump.

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank - for just about all cases I am aware of, the fuel tank has to be dropped. This can be a chore, to the point that some pickup truck owners will opt to remove the bed rather than drop the tank.

If you chose to change the pump yourself - be extremely careful - use non-sparking tools, such as a wood or brass drift, etc. This is one job where a mistake will cost way more than paying a professional to do the work.

The fuel pump can be found at most parts stores. Recommend not to get the bargain-basement brand - this is a job you will only want to do once. Make sure your checkbook is filled up - these pumps are not cheap - probably looking in the ballpark of a couple hundred dollars.

Suggest to buy a shop manual for your model and year while you're there - it will have pictures and procedures for replacement.
