hello and thank you for any replies in advance ..

i have this 2005 pontiac montana that was running fine up til tuesday this week , however i have 1 issue with the van ! when i drive it for over 2 hrs the speedometer begins to climb ,, ex im doing 60 km and the speedo shows im doing 120 .. not a problem just follow speed of traffic when this does happen !!
to correct this i have found if i park the van and turn the ignition off then on then off then on then off then on as many times as required the speedo drops back down to zero ..

this happened to me tuesday i stopped at home depot , then returned home , when i parked the van i proceeded to do what i have always done to reset the speedo and bring it back to zero ,as mentioned above .... and again the speedo went to zero , the van sat in the driveway the remainder of the nite ..

i get up wednesday morning and jump in the van to go to work and turn the ignition and well the lights all came on and the radio came on, the van did not turn over , just 1 quiet click !!!!

tested battery and it is fully charged , so my first thought was the starter .

so i lightly tapped starter as my daughter turned van over and again , just 1 quiet click ...

i also using a pry bar touched the 2 terminals on the starter together which made the starter spin, but it did not ingage ,,

i have also looked at each fuse both at side of dash and under hood ..

anyone have any suggestions ? as i have limited funds

1 dont wanna pay some outrages tow charge to get it to a shop , then pay an additional $200 bucks for pontiac to just inspect the car and tell me what is wrong with it ..

oh 1 other thing i though maybe slight chance that perhaps me turning ignition of then on then off then on then off then on to make speedo drop back down to zero , maybe sent the car into some anti theft mode i have read about ?? is this possible

i aalso tride turning car on , left key in run possition for 11 min then turned of for 15 seconds then did that procedure about 4 times in a row and nothing happened

any suggestions would be apprciated

thanks

Ignition switch? When they go bad I seen some weird stuff happen. Try exercising it more, contact cleaner , a few taps while having it engaged and maybe u can bring it back to life if so then ur on the right path.

No , u have to take off the plastic around the steering colum then that will expose the switch and gears that turn and also you will see the contacts that are turned/engaged by the key and those gears. There are a set of contacts that engage and do different things some are spring loaded . I'm thinking those contacts aren't making properly ? Look at rockauto.Com for a picture of the switch. Remember there are airbag wires that run through the colum so be careful .

try to clean the jump terminal on the fuse block. That was the issue from when I got my Montana.

The wire on the 2000 Montana goes from the battery to the jump terminal. I just removed the bolt, sanded the area well to get a good shiny metal then put a bit of dielectric grease. where it bolts together thats how the fuse block gets it's power
