My 2005 Sunfire has been hard to start. It will eventually start, but usually only after a minute of cranking. Sometimes it turns on immediately, and then some days it will barely start at all. The mileage has been pretty awful as well.

I know for a fact that there is gas coming through the vacuum line connected to the FPR. We have replaced the regulator twice. It fixes the problem for a short time, but then it comes back.

Also, I lose engine power when I make right turns (not left), and I have trouble accelerating after a turn. This is probably caused by gas from the FPR flooding the motor.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Not me but I would think maybe a vacuum leak somewhere?? Spray various points around the intake and throttle body while its started and then see if the idle changes if it does then you found your leak.

Also make sure you hear your pump come on when you turn your key to ACC.

Oh yeah and the obvious thing to check is your plugs and wires to find out if they are still good. start engine pull each wire one at a time if you see arcing from the boot to the plug then the wire is good. Then just check your plugs.

Oh and I recently found out that your EGR valve could cause sluggish problems while driving. Manually depress the EGR plunger and then hold finger over vacuum line and if it falls back down with your finger on it then its bad.

And also both me and Doug found out that a IAC valve can cause all sorts of starting/idling and driving problems. IAC valve is just fancy for automatic choke ran by your computer. It allows a certain amount of air to be added to the fuel and does it by values stored in the computer. If its wonky then it will do all sorts of weird shit.

So thats my full list of suggestions lol hopefully one helps out.

Oh and I know this sounds stupid but make sure no one crimped a fuel line by accident doing something else. I've had this happen and it can cause it to have trouble starting and so forth even if it is barely crimped.

Good luck man

Oh and I have been on a kick lately bitching about EGR valves. The truth is while they can help reduce the amount of gas you burn by a small fraction they do so at the peril of yur intake. They do nothing but blow exhaust gases back into the intake. So if you look inside your intake this is what makes it look like a exhaust pipe. Although if you block it you will fail emissions unless you got an old ass car. So the only other option a person has is to remove and clean it.

If I was you I would remove and clean the IAC and the EGR ports so you know there is plenty of flow through the intake.

EGR Disability!

We don't need no stinkin' inspections! I pulled my wire and it idles fine. Will report. One of the reasons I moved to the Great Northwest! In 1995 you could still buy leaded gas at the local pumper.

Yeah I agree with TM on this that pulling the wire might be the only real viable option especially if you don't want to spend a ton. I have an inspection here but my car is 25 years old so it don't even get the emissions test any more.

But I would also like to point out that there is a EGR bypass that can be done which allows you to block it off and then do a mod to the ECM to stop a CEL from coming on. Usually only a visual inspection is done of the EGR and the thing up the tail pipe won't read bad and fail you. This is why if you do block it then leave the old one in place and just block the ports underneath. It then looks like you got the EGR and with the mod you don't throw the code.
