A friend of mine has a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire that will not go into gear. I told him I'd take a look at it for him but I'm looking for some info before I jack it up, if that's required. The shifter moves freely but it won't go into any gear. It appears to be (thankfully) stuck in neutral. I saw some videos that suggest the shifter linkage/cable whatever connection is accessible from the engine bay. Does anyone have any detailed pictures or walkthroughs on this subject? Or any other possible ideas what the issue could be?

Many thanks.

the cables connect to the shift mechanism on the top of the transmission. The cable or the linkage may have broken.

Yes, I realize that. What I'm asking is where is the access to the cable? Also, if anyone knows how to remove the shifter knob that would be appreciated as well.

Once you open the hood and look at the top of the transmission you will see the cables and the external shift mechanism. Number 63 on the attached link shows the exact location of the cable bracket on the housing. The knob is a press fit and can be very difficult to remove.

Yeowzer. I see where it connects and everything, but there's a plate that seems to be attached to a brake booster or something in front of the master cylinder. That whole apparatus has to come off to even be able to see what exactly broke in there. I can see the shifter cable moving, it's come off or broke off the lever directly on the transmission.
