Our 2006 Torrent is acting up and I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas on what could be wrong.

As we drive out of nowhere, the car starts binging like a door is open, the speedo, rpm, gas and engine temp goo to zero for an indefinite time and do not all come back st the same time. Different dash lights also light up (abs, traction control one with the line through it, the exclamation mark), and just this week the power steering stops working. Leaving the car for a bit seems to make the power steering return.

I've tried wiggling my keys while in the ignition while driving at slow speeds but can't seem to make the issue occur. My wife sees the problem more than me, si I used her keys today and saw the problem. Her keys are not much heavier than mine.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Brad

have you checked your battery cables, at the battery, the starter, and the ground?

Hi melsg5,

Thanks for your reply. I will have a look at that. Thank you for the suggestion.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but am doing what I can to learn and really enjoying it.

To be clear, you're talking about the red and black cables running to the battery?

thanks,
Brad

I have checked the red and black connections to my battery and they look fine. No corrosion or anything else... all clean.

you make no mention if you checked the other ends of those cables, the starter and engine ground?
if possible check the connections on the underside of the engine compartment fuse box
do you have a check engine light on?

Sorry for my slow reply. I gave up and took it to the local garage.

They checked all the grounds and ended up tightening a number of them as well as the connections to the battery (even after I tightened them... guess I need to work out). The power steering returned, but various warning lights kept coming on and the chime kept ringing randomly.

We decided to spend the cash and get the ignition switch replaced. We now have fewer dash lights coming on and the chime happens less frequently, but it's still happening.

The garage still has my old ignition switch and they said they'd put it back in... they're good guys.

I read on another forum that having something on the passenger seat could also cause a few sensors to fire, so I need to check that when I drive the Torrent (usually my wife does). We also took all our keys off the ring and only have the fob to unlock the doors remotely. Issue persists.

I did take the drivers seat out to fix the heat pad. There are a few connections there, but I did that a long time ago, and no issues immediately after that.

Was going through an auto car wash and it broke the rear drivers tail light. It essentially took the flat part off, and left the rest. We put it back on with the sticky stuff used to put windshields in place.

There is a ground that works in conjunction with the tumbler... not sure if this could be a part of it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib68433p6JM

ummm.... my breaks squeak a bit... I need to change them...

I really can't think of what else could be causing this.

Thanks again for reading my post.

so is the remaining problem the chime goes off randomly while driving?

Hi,

Again, sorry for my slow reply.

I've had my torrent into a shop for the whole week last week, and now at a dealership for this entire week. No one know's what's going on.

Symptoms are the same.
1. Intermittent loss of Power Steering
2. Instrument panel gauges all go to zero and then return
3. Radio turns off and on
4. The Brake, ABS, TCS and Low Traction lights come on and go off.
5. Chime begins to ring

The length of time that these symptoms last varies.

Power steering can work or not work when first starting the car, even if the chime, and gauges etc. work.

Everything else continues to work while these symptoms present.

The dealership said that as soon as a code registers it's cleared by the system so hard to catch.

The first shop said we should try replacing the BCM. We got a used one but BCM's are "learn once" apparently and so you can't put a used BCM in. That's when we took it to the dealer. The first shop tightened all the grounds as well. We also took the radio fuse out to see if it was the radio that was causing the suspected data problems, but symptoms persisted regardless.

The problem seems to happen more at higher air temps than on cooler days. The dealership can't get the power steering to act up, but the chime and gauge issues are present.

The first shop told me that the power steering was a part of the BCM in 2006, but 2007 and on it was a separate module. The dealership suggested yesterday to replace the power steering module for $1600. Not sure who is correct on this one.

I think that's everything I know so far.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions of places to look that would be GREAT!!

Thanks,
Brad

Hi All,

Problem is now solved.

The mechanic did check all the grounds, the main ones... we went back and checked them all and the connections to the actual BCM in the dash was loose, he could wiggle the cable quite a bit. So he tightened it and the problem has not returned.

So the lesson here is to check all the connections not just some.

good to hear you solved it
