2008 service airbag warning

Whenever I have someone in the passenger seat, I get the service airbag warning. The code indicated by that warning indicates that the "passenger presence module" is malfunctioning, but the passenger air bag turns on.

My service center wants to change the passenger presence module even though it senses the presence of a passenger at a cost of $700.

Does this module really need changing?

I guess it depends if you are a gambling person. If you are involved in an accident and there is a passenger in the front seat when the airbags deploy and the failure of the sensor causes the airbag to not properly deploy based upon the persons weight, you could end up with some legal issues.
