Hey everyone. My 64 Catalina has the original Hydramatic in it and it is shifting strangely and I'm wondering if anyone has advice. When it shifts into second gear, the rpms drop really low, it sounds like it is going to stall. I don't have a tacometer so I don't know where it is at for sure but it sure sounds to go below 1500. The other thing I am experiencing is when I come to a stop and I'm in second gear, it waits until I am almost completely stopped to shift into first, it is literally about to stall then it shifts. Is any of this normal? I'm not familiar with Hydramatics. Thanks.

are you sure this is a transmission problem and not an engine issue?
does the Hydramatic use a vacuum modulator and if so have you checked the hose to insure it is not cracked or broken?
when is the last time the transmission was serviced, dropped pan, changed filter?

Do you have the roto hydromatic 375 (AKA slim jim) transmission?

With mine the torque converter locks up when shifting up from first gear. There is a carburetor dash pot (also known as a throttle return dash pot) that is supposed to keep the car from stalling. When coming to a stop the car starts to stall, the vacuum decreases and the spring loaded dash pot pushes the throttle open on the carburetor to prevent stalling.

You can also shift into neutral when coming to a stop and if it isn't stalling, then you need to adjust or replace the carburetor dash pot.
