305 manual shift engine removal help

hi guys me again need a little advice please my 1979 t/a 5.0 is going in for paint job whole car, so last night i took the transmission out as clutch was gone anyway found thrust bearing bas all broke so new one gonna be ordered this week 26 spline. anyway im about to take out the engine but one thing seems to puzzle me as i looked at it last night and its to do with the shifter/ locking of gears when key is not in the car it seems to be a metal rod that goes into the block and i need to know how to remove this before i go to lift engine out on a engine crane can anyone shed anylight on this please.

I just pulled my 305 4 spd out. You are referring to the clutch Z bar, it sits on a ball joint that bolts into the block and the otherside has a nut you just remove and it will pull off the block. Make sure to take plenty of pics before removing.
Check the Ames performance catalog pgs 236-37 for pictures of the Zbar and locking for the steering column.

the catalog is at www.amesperf.com but are you talking about the clutch mechanism/z bar that the clutch pedal rod attaches to? If so there should be a bracket on the frame that supports the z-bar on one side and a ball on the engine block that supports the other side. On the frame bracket side you should see a nut which you loosen/remove and then raise the bar out of the bracket and it pulls off the ball on the block. Typically the shifter has a cable attached to the reverse lever which locks the steering column but nothing goes into the block.

In the Haynes manual 1970-81 you'll find the diagram on page 203 it has view A pointing to it.
