I'm looking into purchasing a 1975 Firebird without an engine or transmission as a project car. But if I'm going to be buying a muscle car, it's gotta have some muscle. Conveniently, I can get a 1972 400 HO engine block locally, and I'm wondering if it'll fit without any drastic changes (different radiator, hoses, some wiring, etc. is fine).

Thanks for any help :)

there was no 1972 400 HO block, the only HO engine in 1972 was the 455 HO so be careful about what you are buying get the codes off the block. Any real Pontiac V8 will fit the 1975 Firebird.

Oh, sorry, my memory slipped. It's a 455. Oops.

Is it possible to change the thread title?

again check the code a real 1972 455 HO block goes for nice piece of change

I was planning on it. I'm aware, ahah, I'm paying more for it than I am the car itself.

Are you looking at a Complete 455 HO engine? or Just the Block? Unless I was Purchasing a Block for a Correct part I would not Spend the Extra $$$ for a 455HO Block. Other than 4-bolt main bearings the block is not much stronger than any other 455 Block. I actually have a 73 Standard Bore 455 Block you could have for $400 plus delivery.

The Power on those engines came from the round Port Heads, and the Cam Shafts. And for up to 500-550HP you do not even need the 4 bolt mains on a street car. If the car is going to see mostly Track Driving then 4-bolt Mains are a good Idea. But you can start out with any 455 Block (as most are drilled to accept 4 bolt Main Caps on the #2, #3, & #4 Main Jornals) and have them Line Bored for a set of after market caps.

Just some thing to think about.

Seeme = in my old memory-- that a GM / chev 454 engine will fit with standard mounts (chev) that swap was done years back-many done as i remember & was an easy straight forward swap too!!
