My son's 2001 Grand Prix was having the no 4th gear issue, so I decided to attack it. I found that the cookie cutter gear (4th gear shaft) splines were gone, just like everyone says, so I replaced it with a new hardened unit. While I was at it I replaced five solenoids, since I was in there and didn't want to have to EVER return. 4th gear is back to normal and the world is good.
However, the shifting of gears is a little odd now. It seems to shift into third gear prematurely and sometimes the same with second. I have tried doing the manual shifting a little to help it "relearn", but I haven't noticed any difference yet. Is it something that is just going to have to come back after lots of driving or is there a trick I should know about?

have you disconnected both battery cables and touched them together then reconnect both cables

No, but the negative cable was disconnected during the entire repair job. What does touching the cables together do?

Ok. I touched them together for a while. No change. Still shifts into 3rd prematurely.

Do you have a manual that explains the functions of the different solenoids? If yes, and one of them is intended for the 3rd gear shift I would suspect that solenoid.

Actually, after more careful observation and some manual shifting to verify, I now think it is the 1st to 2nd shift that is coming in a little hard. If I do it manually with a little extra rpm it shifts beautifully, but if the rpm is a little lower, or I am letting it shift automatically, it almost feels like there is an extra gear between them. It will feel like normal 1 to 2 shift (though a little early) and then it lunges into 2nd, but feels like 3rd. However, it goes through two more shifts, so it must be 2nd. Is there any way this can be from low fluid level? It is really hard to determine the level because the stick is picking up residual fluid every time I check it. I put in about 7 1/2 qts following it's major surgery.

You are checking the fluid level while running the engine and placing the shifter first into each gear?

I've been checking it with the engine running and in park. Is it necessary to go through all the gears, too?

And the shop manual says the same thing. Thanks. So I did this and found that it was 2 quarts low. There has got to be a better way to read the level. TF is so hard to read against that dipstick. Anyway, the car seems to be a bit better now, though it still shifts just a little weird. Sorta like it has five gears instead of four.

you do realize in 4th gear say cruising on a highway it engages the lockup torque converter causing an additional slight drop in rpm?

The last shift is probably the Torque Converter locking up. Should be 1 thru OD, and the Converter locking up. Sorry Mel, didn't see your post

No problem, glad to have you confirm my guess.

Kinda what I have been thinking too. Question: does the TCC lock in when the solenoid valve is open or when it is closed?
