i have a "thief system service" light on the panel any idea what could cause this?

additional info on previous post. the car is a 04 sunfire.

Your car has a passlock system as described on page 2-17 of the owners manual. The sensor in the lock cylinder is having an issue. Assuming the key is not damaged in any way the sensor or it's wiring harness may have an issue.

The risk you take is that one day it completely fails and then the car wont start. I recommend you shop around for another shop privately owned. Try this procedure to see if you can turn the light off.

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
Observe the SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10 minutes , the light will turn OFF. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Pass lock Sensor Data Code and/or password XX the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
Start the engine, the vehicle has now learned the password.
