70 catalina transmission problem

Hey guys im having trouble with my cars transmission, it has the original pontiac 350, with i believe it also has the 350 automatic transmission, its a 4 door sedan.

the problem is that the car isnt shifting to 3rd gear properly, and if it does the engine is at near high revs, it has been leaking oil, didnt cause any real problems until it started causing clouds of smoke from the oil that was leaking.which i found out it was the module not sure thats the correct name of the part, and since then it has stopped leaking, then the shifting problem kept occuring i hope i didnt cause any real damage to the tranny.

did you check if you have a shift cable on the throttle and if it is correctly adjusted?

3rd Gear Slip;

Turbo 350's have a couple of common problems. One common problem is the governor gear "apple coring". The plastic gear on the governor wears so it looks like an apple core. This allows the governor to slip and cause erratic problems. Easily checked by popping the governor cover and removing it for inspection.

Another very common problem is the accumulator piston spring breaking, again easily checked by removing the accumulator cover on the side of the trans.

Worse case , which will require trans removal or rebuild:

1) Front Pump Bad

2) 3rd Gear Clutches Gone

You received and installed the correct modulator?

They go bad when they leak trans fluid internally into the vacumn hose.

Check your hose and line back to the engine for clogs or debris.

Some are adjustable also............with a small screwdriver.

yes i did it only seems to have the throttle cable i will make sure on saturday

hopefully its just the governor the car hasn't moved since i was 5, and i barely started driving it until 2 years ago, i was thinking of maybe changing the trans filter, and see what changes could happen since it might have lost pressure but i will check on the governor asap, would this require to remove the tranny?

for some reason my earlier response wasn't displayed, but i think it might be the governor, since the car hadn't been driven for about 12 years or so, hopefully this could be the problem. aside from that im going to change the oil filter in the tranny maybe its losing pressure if the filter did get clogged, at least i think this could be a problem as well

You'll have to take a look under the car at the tail end of your tranny. If there are no obstructions to the covers on either side you should be able to access them without dropping the tranny, although not without some difficulty depending on what's in the way and how much room you have to work.

Wear gloves and eye protection when you go at it and have a drip pan ready for any spills that may occur.

and judging by how big the car is i think i have plenty of room to be able to look into it.

hey guys sorry it took so long to update.. i decided to just rebuild the transmission so that i wont have to worry about it anymore, but that would be in the summer.
