Hello all. Forced newbie.lol by necessity.
Have a 70 lemans sport. 355 lunati cam.turbo350 b&m shftkit 2400 stall
messed up worn out column. decided to replace with chrome aftermarket.
Problem is price/locating right length/. have b&m floorshift. need a floorshift keyed chrome column that isnt 500 bux.
The ebay listings show many columns for chevelle/olds/buick that look similar
for 280 dollars. Anyone know why I cant use one of those the correct length.
Whats the difference if any?. gm "a" body.... ebays compatibility chart shows no 70 pontiac lemans sport references. looking for a swap that doesnt cost 500 bux. thanx any help greatly appreciated.

I would think if those other columns fit a Pontiac they would list it in order to sell more columns. If you are interested in a used factory column you could try www.frankspontiacparts.com . You can buy rebuilt columns from www.amesperf.com

Update.
For everyone else thats struggled with such insane column prices just because my car has a cousin named GTO.
3 weeks of comparing gm columns trying to find the difference that would warrant my column costing 793 dollars and a gm a body chrome tilt for 69-72 chevelle/buick/olds
only 274 to the doorstep.
Classic Performance Parts could not answer. Only telling me it would take extensive retrofit and would not work.
after more research failing to show any major difference, I bought the chevelle column.
slammed it in with the only mod being a rubber spacer in the upper dash undermount.
the provided hazzard adapter kit came with new to old harness adapter.
swapped main ignition plug off old column.
Nothing a 15 yr old highschool kid couldnt handle.

So my final opinion is this is a major industry rip off beware!! common sense prevails.

Hi I am curious if money was a concern why did you opt to replace the column rather than rebuilding it?

Were parts no longer available for it?

It has been some time since I had one apart but if i remember correctly the tilt column if equipped had some bolts in them for the tilt mechanism that would just loosen up. ( no parts needed for a repair unless you break the horn ring or find some other small part broke )

I also found that the stock old GM column can be stripped down media blasted and polished to a show finish then clear coated that rivals any chrome finish ( yet will not rust or pit ) or you could send the parts off and have them chromed.

Anyways I know your already done and this is too late to be helpful now but i was curious why the column needed to be replaced.

Needed tilt/floor ... converted to floorshift. couldnt get there no cheaper. guaranteed

Cool, I did not notice you were changing to a floor shifter.

Good luck with your ride.

some things you just replace. you dont rebuild an alternater/waterpump/starter
its just not worth it. my same attitude with the column
