The previous owner mentioned a problem about the fuel gauge messing up. He told us that it gets sort of stuck, but if we drove it after a few times it would sort itself out. Is there any possible explanation to cause this to happen:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1426910604.847955.jpg
It's reading that I have more fuel than I could possibly put in there, so the lever on the sending unit most likely isn't stuck, correct?

To check the gauge unplug it at the sender look at the gauge should go all the way one way then ground it should go all the way the other way .. if it does you know the gauge is good you will need a sender.

clean the ground connection and see if that corrects the problem

Avell007 we tried that and the fuel gauge needle didn't budge. Melsg5 do you think that cleaning it would fix the problem?

As Melsg5 says it could be the ground at the gauge or even power at the gauge. . Now your at checking the gauge for ground and power ,if you have both go to the third wire that goes to the sender if you ground that and the gauge don't move the gauge is toast

i was referring to the ground connection at the sender
