I'm restoring a 79 Formula Firebird. It has the turned aluminum dash insert like a Trans Am. I've seen Formulas with faux wood grain as well. Which is correct? Was the turned aluminum finish available for Formula firebirds in 1979, or was that a "trans am only" option? Thanks for the help!!!

The turned aluminum was used on all Trans Am's and the Formula's with the V-8 in 1979. The 6-cyl Formula's had wood grain.

I do not know if this carried thru on the earlier years But 1979 thru 1981 are as listed above.

THANKS - very useful info. I didn't know they made 6 cylinder Formula's. Wow. We got very lucky and actually found a 1979 L78 Formula (yes, one of 346 w 400 4spd!!!)

May I ask further questions? In a non-T-Top Formula, what is the head liner material in 1979 - cloth or vinyl. If both were options, how can I tell which is correct. The build sheet says the car had the custom interior and the decor package, if that helps narrow things down

Instrument gage back-lighting: what color should it be in a Formula? I remember a greenish color from my 78 and 79 T/A (bought new in 78 & 79), but my Formula has red back lighting which I though was unique to the 10th Anniversary SE model. Can you advise on this?
