hi everybody. i'm new to the group. back in the early 90's i had an 85 GT 5 speed. great car. other than nowhere to put a baby seat I had absolutely no issues with it. now my son has recently picked up an 84 SE 2.5L automatic. runs fair and drives fine but transmission goes through all gears by 15-20 MPH regardless of how i take off. is there something he can check before we pull it.

The first thing I’d look at is the modulator. I don’t know your car but it should be mounted on the transmission. Check to be sure the vacuum line is connected and not split or cracked. I’d also drop the transmission pan and change the fluid and filter.

when looking for parts the transmission is a 125C.

Reset and check the TV cable ( that controls shifting videos on YouTube show how) , there is no vacuum modulator on the TH125c , also the convertor lockup ( TCC) is the blue plug in front towards the radiator, pull that connector if the car stalls at a stop.( The solenoid is under the side cover on the driver's side if it needs replacing)

The trans is very durable, but first to go is the reverse/ 1st gear on these trans.

thank you, i'll take a peek at these videos.

If unsure after the above research, a quick trip to a local reputable transmission shop may save you from pulling the trans., as 92SunbirdLE pointed out, they are a fairly durable transmission, have it inspected before you go through all that trouble.

Best of luck.
