I have a 1986 Pontiac Sunbird and I want to replace the timing belt. How do I align the pulleys and belt when I install the new belt? I also need to double check the ignition timing setting because I suspect the previous owner has this all fouled up.

UPDATE!

Found a Chilton in my stuff still packed, it says to dissconnect the 4 prong connecter on the distributor and set the timing by the sticker under the hood with the timing marks posted on it.

There is usually a mark on the timing belt housing and cam sprocket to turn cam to TDC and a mark in the harmonic balancer (crank pulley whatever you wanna call it) that aligns to a bracket type timing on mine it is 8 and it sits right in front of the water pump. But if your doing it with the harmonic balancer removed then there should be a mark in the oil pan and on the crank shaft that lines up.

When you find it all it should be pretty easy to figure out.
