My Fiero starts and idles at 2 grand. Is this common for fieros and anything that can be done for it. Also the gauge shows charging in the red going down highway and accelerating and back to normal when slowing. Check engine light came on and went out and wondered if charging may have anything to do with it. New owner of Fieros and trying to figure this out. (61K only) Thanks

I don't think alternator has to do with the idle, mine idles around 3-4k when starting 1,500 to 2k after calming.

Actually! it does... what do you think powers the car when running?! the alt..what is spark?! electricity..so if the alt is going out it would put a drain on the system making it idel funny and cause the volt meter to go up and down

@MSF- Failing regulator (internal to the alternator) can cause your charging issues. Have the alt. tested. High idle seems to be a common issue with these cars. Vacuum leaks, IAC and EGR are the most common causes.

@Roadrunner- Fuel and air powers the car. Disconnect your alternator and the car will run for a suprisingly long time on the battery. The computer controls the ignition system and the input voltage to the coil(s) is constant.

with out power the car no go and viseversa with the fuel and air...and Wrong! Air and fuel is the combustion source not a power source.your thinking like a rookie.without a constant flow of power "alt"where would the computer get it's power from?! and yes the car can run on the battery for awhile.which will cause the problems this person is having.Did you not read about the voltage meter going up and down?!but what does anything your saying have to do with helping this person?..nothing! so stop lurking..

such a defensive person. How does a diesel run without spark plugs? Gasoline engines are NOT voltage dependent a failing regulator, which changes the Alternating current into Direct Current and limits the voltage to 13.8 (Nominal) will cause a high voltmeter reading at higher engine speeds.

You can take what i said as being defensive but I just hate ignorance..were not talking about diesels..way different engines bud..and yes! but if you have a failing voltage regulator "alternator" sinse the regulator is built in and should be replaced as a whole,it can go both ways.High or Low...if all the charging components are working properly it should NOT raise in voltage that high..the most it should raise if working properly is 14.8..not in the red as he said..Please read carfully what people say so there is no mistake's made but us helping others

@roadrunner
I still fail to see how alternator regulates rpms, its not even necessary to have an alternator to run.

never said it regulates rpm.less electrical flow means less spark..which means a bad running car.i was referring to the voltage problem he has..as i agreed with zimgxp that it's most likely a vac leak .And did you just say a car don't need a alt to run :confused: lmao ..yes a car will run on the battery alone for a short time.. but as the battery gets drained what happens? your a joke lol..but i do get a laugh off of you..I bet you could'nt tell me the type of grounding system is used on a automoble..

hey guys can we keep this thread a technical discussion and not let it degenerate into something else, thanks.

1. Wasn't trying to fight with you, was simply trying to figure out what you ment. I'm no mechanic I only know what I personally expierenced. A car will run without a alternator but when the battery drains it will die.

2. Immaturity if you want to laugh at me for questioning you, you should always just back up what you say.

3. It could be a vac leak, fan switch sensor.

Sorry Mel, just having fun..

SGPHIREWIRE.. if you are looking for details on how automotive works or have quistions P.m me. or start a new thread..
