i am wanting to adjust the governor on my 1987 pontiac firebird, but i cant remember how! its shifting at 4,500 rpm, which is just 500 away from red line. i want to back it down to 3,500.help.

There is no governor or anything else on your car that you can adjust to change the parameters when your cars transmission is going to shift. This is a function of load and pressure with the appropriate shift point determined by the manufacturer. On some older model cars changing and adjusting the modulation valve on the transmission will allow for some shifting point adjustment, but probably not to the degree you are wanting. And normally this route is used to increase the shifting point, not a decrease that you are looking for. Have the tranny serviced, new filter and fluid and that will probably solve your problem. With a 20 year old car and no telling how many miles you could be headed for an overhaul / rebuild of the transmission also.

I think the adjustment is in your detent or throttle valve cable.

You can adjust the throttle valve cable BUT I would NOT suggest trying it your self they tend to be difficult to adjust correctly and when NOT adjusted right will damage the trans go to a trans or service shop and pay to have it adjusted correctly ...
