I have an '87 GT Fiero with a blown engine and have been told the block is shot beyond repair, obviously now would be the time for an engine swap to a bigger motor. Where can I find a list of what engines will bolt up to the 4 speed trans?
Or should I just stick with the V6 and find another block to work with?

Engines that bolt up to the Fiero transaxles are:
Any 60* V-6 up to 2002 So you can swap in a 3.4L from a 1993-1995 Firebird/Camaro and have the engine look stock but gain about 20hp. Newer versions like the 3400 used in Grand Am's will bolt up but require more wiring. (about 185hp)
The 3800 engines including the supercharged 3800SC. (240-280hp depending on version)
The early 1990's Cadillac 4.9L V-8 (200hp)
The Cadillac Northstar V-8 (300hp)

The 3.4L is the easiest choice. The block is the exact same size as the 2.8L on the outside and bolts in using stock mounts. They can be modded to just over 200hp.

The 4.9L is also very easy to do.

The 3800 and Northstar require some more work, But have the best horsepower gains. The 3800SC is a VERY popular swap and there are some Fiero's around that have over 400hp out of a modified engine.

So how fast do you want to go and how much do you want to spend??

Well I really wanted to rebuild the 2.8L and keep the car original if I could but am having a hard time finding another 2.8 motor to use. I'm also thinking I'd just like to get rid of this car as the body is in mint condition, no motor is the only problem with this car.

If you want to keep it looking "stock" a 3.1L from an early 90's minivan or a 3.4L from a 1993-1995 Firebird/Camaro would be the best choice. The engines are identical to a 2.8L just different displacements. All you do is find one and install the Fiero intake and valve covers on it and bolt it in. There is an increase in power and a improvements. Once done you cannot tell it isn't the stock engine. The entire swap can be done within 10 hours. The 3.4L is a very popular upgrade even GM sells a brand new 3.4L crate engine designed to be a replacement for the 2.8L (although they made it to swap into S-10 trucks it works for Fiero's as well.)
Actually all you need is the "short block" so you can order a reman 3.4L for a Firebird from many auto parts places and the cost is usually around $900.
