87 trans am gta 5.7 tpi L98

I have just bought this car and my timing is a little out of wak, and i was curious if i have to unplug anything from my disturber cap before i check it and what the timing should be at, Also if i was to advance it how many degrees at most? the motor is stock, only up grades are exhaust and cold air intake.

There is a single wire above the heater blower motor. Unplug it and set the timing to 6 degrees btdc.
