Ok so I just got a 88 gt fastback and the rpm works but is not accurate. According to the gauge at an idle I sit at 2300 rpms and I can rev it well past the red line mark (only did that once). I have no idea what is wrong with it. Do I have to replace the rpm gauge or is it in the distributer or something else entirely??

I thought the same thing of mine when I got it, Idling high and easy ot "over-rev". I checked the RPM with a hand held tach to verify that the installed one is correct. Look for vacuum leaks.

Ok I'll do that and I know the rpm aren't just high the gauge is off completely I just wasn't sure where to start to fix the problem thank again ill check that.

I had the same problem.
I replaced the tach, worked fine after that. You could have a problem with the tach filter also. It is the small silver can with 2 white wires coming from it, located between distributor and coil mounted to the engine. If you end up needing the filter, 4cyl and 6cyl are different.
Hope that helps.
