91 Firebird Issue, please check this!?

Ok got a small car issue. First off its a 91 Firebird with 305 v8 with 197xxx miles. I ran into an issue last night. Car has driven fine for over 35,000 miles straight. I started the car last night and the idle was really funny. The car runs like its on 5 of the cylinders only, has very poor acceleration as well. I can get the car going 80mph still, but the Tach bounces up and down and it like I said drives like its half the engine working. The exhaust did come off the other day from the cat converter all the way back, cat is still there though. Driving today it all of a sudden went away and it was running perfect, then it went back to running like crap again, any ideas?

Suggest to pull the computer codes to see if anything has been flagged.

Offhand, sounds like one of the electronic components with the ignition may be on its way to failing.

If you don't already have a shop manual, such as Chiltons, Haynes, Motor, etc., recommend to get one. These will have troubleshooting and testing procedures for individual components that will prevent random replacements and the corresponding waste of cash. Also, many local parts stores can test these components for you, but you generally have to pull them off the car.
