Anything I should know before I dig in to my buddy's car? I havent looked at it yet but the filter should have a few screws holding it on and I can buy a new gasket kit for 12 bucks. Is this right?

To change a tranny filter, you will need the gasket and filter, they usually come in a set, and about five quarts of transmission fluid. Hopefully the transmission pan will be easily accessible, most GM cars have 2 screws that hold the filter on after you have dropped the pan. Clean the pan before putting it back on, checking for metal shavings in the sludge(this is a sign of worn out clutches). In my opinion the transmission should also be back flushed, but that is a shop function, but it does increase the performance and life of the transmission.

depending on which transmission it is, they are not difficult, just messy to do in the drive way. you might have the thm 125, the 44t4 or the 4t60e, if it is the 4t60e the gasket is reusable.

As was previously pointed out - the biggest hassle is the mess. Have yet to find a neat way to drain the pan.

$12 for a filter sounds a bit on the cheap side - make sure it's a good filter and not just something that fits.

Hard to say how much fluid it will take to refill - varies widely between trannies. Just be sure to use the right stuff.

If the fluid is extremely nasty - suggest to have a tranny shop do the full get-up, or consider to change the fluid and filter again in a few thousand miles - the solution to pollution is dilution.
