I have a '94 firebird that pops and bogs down in each gear after the engine has warmed up. When switching gears it does this until about the time to go into next gear...it stops as long as rmps are high and steady in that gear...if speed goes down it starts again. It scares the crap out of me every time it pops it sounds like it is right under my feet. I had a diagonisitc run on it and 2 codes came up the crank shaft positioning sensor and the iginition control module...would either of these be the culprit and if so, which one? If not any suggestions?

Crank shaft positioning sensor helps control ignition timing. If timing goes out you could have back firing like that due to incomplete combustion of your fuel. It ignites after it's supposed to. Ignition control is related as well.

Sounds like a timing problem.
Yes it could be either one of these.
Hint:always start with the cheapest part to change out first.

You have a distributor in that car. It is under the water pump. Every 50,000 miles you have to replace your rotor and cap. When these components get old the contacts get worn. As the engine warms up the components expand and the contacts stop working properly, misfiring, backfiring, and eventually the car will stall altogether. Those codes are typical of an Optispark Distributor that is beginning to go. Get the cap and rotor replaced and it will run like new again with better fuel economy.

Where to get a cap and rotor?

My daughters' '94 T/A is doing the same thing...bogging, knocking, back-firing, NO power at all. I've read that I can just replace the cap and rotor (cheapest parts first). But I cannot find just the cap and rotor anywhere for under $170 bucks!!! Where can a person get a cap and rotor without spending the same amount as buying a whole new distributor? This is crazy!!!

www.gmpartsdirect.com has the cap for 30.48 and the rotor i'm having trouble finding. Can you get the GM part numbers and then go to the website to look it up?
