Well guys,
I'm smack dab in the middle of replacing my timing belt, and water pump.
Replaced the clutch already.

I had a bugger of a time getting the front oil seal out of the oil pump housing. Service manual states "pry out".
Same thing with the water pump. I used a 4ft. prybar behind the pulley and tons of penetrating oil. I was about to give up when I noticed the pump sticking out about an 1/8 of an inch. several soakings later and it popped out with a Bang! antifreeze went everywhere!
The mounting hole looks rusty. I could not see an old o-ring but my new pump came with one. The housing seems to have a groove for it and it fits into the hole okay. Should I go ahead and use it?

If I use silicone, by the time I get the rear cover on, the lower pulley on, and the cam sprocket and new belt on, the silicone will have begun to set up and I'll still need to adjust the tension by turning the pump.

I figured I'd lube it with some petroleum jelly and let the o-ring seal it.
What do you all think?

why not put some silicone on the O ring?

Home Depot sells plumber's silicone lube for rubber facet seals.Vaseline may work.

The o ring is nessesary for the pump to seal.

Some use regular silicone for the install like Mel said .

I just don't want the silicone to setup while I'm installing the rear timing belt cover which has to go on after the water pump. You then install the upper cam sprocket and the lower drive gear and the belt tensioner and the belt itself, of course. By then the silicone will have begun to dry and when I go to adjust the belt tension by rotating the water pump(which is how you get the correct tension) the silicone seal will be broken and not seal anything.

I'm hoping the o-ring will seal it all by itself and the bit of Vaseline would be to allow the o-ring to slip a bit without binding or twisting. Parker lube does the same thing but is more sticky.

Hey Thanks melsg5!
Mine looks like fig 3. No hoses attached, just hole in the block. I went ahead and added a very small amount of Vaseline to the outer edge of the o-ring. I used a stone on the block to remove rust and any rough edges around where the o-ring sits. I hope I don't have any leaks.

It adjusted just fine. I had trouble getting the lower gear to torque to 114 ft lbs. Dang wood wedge I made kept falling out of the flywheel. I just need a second set of hands for a minute.
The outer cover is on, and all I have left is the big dampner/pulley. I cant seem to figure out how much torque the 4 allen head bolts get. No reference to them.
then small stuff like the overflow bottle to install and the air intake box and hose.
The a/c belt of course (its still hot in Atlanta).
Hoping for a test drive today!

I DID IT !!!!!!
Got her all put back together!
Had an issue with the radiator cap not on correctly. Quick fix there and she took me down the road!
Went ahead and drove her to work today!

New fuel pump (prev repair)
New spark plugs and wires
New front and rear main oil seals
New clutch
New timing belt
New water pump
New axel seals on transmission

The torque on the 4 pulley bolts was 15 ft lbs.
The o-ring w/ Vaseline is holding so far!

Leona should last me a few more years!!

Oil light came on and oil is all over the bottom of oil pan.
will be putting her back on the car ramps tonight :-[

sorry to hear that

well looks like the gasket behind the oil pump housing has decided to leak. Wish it would have before I completed the timing belt job :-(
I'm prob going to have to remove the oil pan and pickup tube to get the dang thing off and replace the gasket. Dang timing belt job gets to come clean off.
Grrrrr.
Getting tired of working on this car. My patience is running thin.

update!
I took the entire timing belt back off. Oil pan is off. Took the oil pickup tube off. Removed the oil pump/front seal housing off. Gasket was broken at corner. So no matter how tight the bolts were she was going to leak.
Ordered new oil pan gasket. Of course no one has it in stock locally. So I placed another order with trusty rock auto.
Already have the oil pump housing gasket in hand. Came with timing belt kit. Was able to procure another front oil seal. Mine looked slightly bent so since I have it out and easier to access I figured why not.
Hopefully this is the last thing Leona will need for a while.
At least now she will also get a fresh oil change.

Dang car was fighting back last evening!
got the oil pump housing all cleaned up and the new gasket on. Pressed in the new front oil seal while it was out and easier access. Used a hand bench press this time. Nice and straight!

The lower gear was the fighter. It attempted to go on crooked. I had to get my puller back out and pull it off even though it was barely on. In the process I bent the two metric bolts for the puller. Then the large center bolt tried to gall up the starting threads. This After I cleaned the threads of all the lock tite 242. So, out came the thread chaser and all seems ok now. Got the gear installed. after that I quit for the night. My planets need to realign or something sheesh!

yes we all run into certain projects that seem to be cursed from the start

now another issue has surfaced :-(

Dang oil pan shield. The original rubber gasket (ie. not cork). had little metal bushings inside every bolt hole. I removed the old gasket and those bushings and now the holes in the shield are larger than the bolts. The old rubber gasket was thicker than the two cork ones I received from rockauto. The oil pan bolt holes are larger than they need to be as well. I think the original thinking was two-fold one, the holes were not able to be misaligned with the block, two the pan would not be smushed with over tightening of the pan bolts.
The dog gone bushings don't fit the holes on the new cork gaskets. I'd have to take an excato blade and trim them so that the gasket didn't bundle up.
I'm thinking about leaving them out and seeing if the bolts would handle a wider washer possibly. The metal in the pan/shield should prevent squishing of the pan edge.
I can also watch and not over torque them
What do yall think?

well I've already purchased the ones I have. Also I've glued them to the shield :-(

On another note I found the water pump adjusting wrench I wanted for 10 bucks on amazon!

Okay!
The 1 13/16 crows foot arrived last night!
I will attempt to install the timing belt once again after work today!
Wonder if I can rent this tool out and help out anyone else?

who ever suggested this crows foot for adjusting the timing belt needs to be shot!
first off the dang thing wont fit between the engine and the rear fwd motor mount!!!!!!!!
I ground off as much material as I dared and after using a punch and hammer got it in there! Prying it out was just as much fun!!

talk about reeeeetaaaahhhh ded

i guess your idea to rent out the tool wont work, sorry again for the grief you are going through
