i just bought a 1995 firebird and when i stomp on the gas the rpms will rack up but the speed stays the same. I think it could be the catalyc converter needs to be cleaned but im not sure so i just wanted to get some other ideas on what it could be. if it helps the guy i bought it from said it had been sitting in his garage for about a year but i dont know how long it takes for gas to go bad and not to mention i filled it up before i left town.

Either your automatic transmission is going out or your clutch is shot, either way have it fixed or you'll be stuck some where.

If it's an auto tranny, check fluid or have it flushed with filter change.

transmision dont know how ur driving it but change the filter
im me or email if its been siting the filter can cake over or clog if not the trans is gone or about to be

my car kind of does the same thing, but the rpms dont rack up that high. and my car speeds up a little as i punch the gas. but im pretty sure it's my cat converter that is causing it. check ur cat after ur car is idling for about 15-20 minutes. if it's glowing red hot, u should def check into replacing it. make sure u have tranny fluid in ur engine, and if u havn't oil changed it, give it an oil change.

If you push down on the gas and the rpm's go up but the speed stays the same you have more trouble than you think. It is probably in the transmission.
